ABOUT US

The Museums Directorate (DM) is the IPC service responsible for the materialization of museological policies, which executes, coordinates, supervises, and promotes actions aimed at the development of the sector at the national level.

The management policy of Museums in Cabo Verde, following the guidelines of the governance program, has sought to improve their position in the country's socio-economic and cultural context, in line with sustainable development strategies, especially in relation to the sectors of tourism, culture and education, assuming a decisive role in safeguarding the national heritage, for the knowledge and appropriation of Cape Verdean history and cultural identity.

Thus, the Museum de Cabo Verde was designed as a project to enhance the national museological framework through the qualification of museums, modernization and strengthening of their attractiveness.

It is institutional and governmental understanding that it is time to formalize the national museological activity. In this sense, the legal framework for museums is currently being updated, which will define criteria for the operation of museums and the creation of a network to improve the level of cooperation between different museums, whether public or private.

The museums carry out research, documentation and incorporation works, with the following general objectives:

  • Safeguarding, conserving, interpreting, exhibiting and publicizing national cultural assets for scientific, educational and recreational purposes.
Protect, value and disseminate the cultural and natural legacy, social, educational, environmental and economic values of Cape Verdeans for the enjoyment of present and future generations;
To be a reference institution, nationally and internationally, in terms of safeguarding and promoting the values and singularities of the Cape Verdean people.

Museums in the development of their actions observe the guidelines issued by the Code of Ethics for Museums approved by ICOM at the 15th General Assembly of ICOM held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on November 4, 1986, modified at the 20th General Assembly in Barcelona, Spain, on July 6, 2001, under the title ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums and revised by the 21st General Assembly held in Seoul, South Korea, on October 8, 2004.
